2010 Annual Report

Special Thanks to our 2011 Mayor’s Annual Senior Holiday Celebration Partner Sponsor, AARP

We would like to thank our presenting sponsors of our 2011 Annual Awards & Fundraiser Event for their generous support of the community and Family Matters:

We appreciate your continued support!

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

Your community needs you! RSVP coordinates volunteer activities for older adults age 55 and over at government agencies, nonprofit organizations, churches, hospitals, and other corporations around the District.

Senior Works

With a lifetime of experience, seniors have love, compassion and wisdom to give in their retirement - and, finally, the time to give it. That is the big idea behind Senior Works. The program encourages seniors who are at least 55 years and older to use their skills and life experiences to better their communities through internships that may lead to paid positions. Family Matters matches retired and senior volunteers to assignments based on their interests and skills.

With Senior Works and RSVP volunteers 55+:
• Stay active and involved by volunteering in the community for a few hours a week;
• Assist with special events, deliver meals to the sick, help children and adults learn to read and; write, mentor, volunteer in hospitals, read or write letters for the disabled, volunteer in local libraries and schools, conduct mass mailings, work on environmental issues and more;
• Receive coverage for personal injury and liability arising from volunteer activities;
• Receive automobile liability insurance in excess of individual insurance, when assignments require driving;
• Receive reimbursement for some expenses, where applicable.

Work Search - Coming Soon!

Family Matters of Greater Washington, in collaboration with AARP, is proud to offer Work Search. Using a computer database, volunteers offer assistance to individuals searching for paid employment.  Work Search provides career information and local job information to those over 40 to help them make the best employment choices for their interests and goals.

Who is eligible?
Anyone 40 years old or older is eligible to come to a free training at Family Matters, 1509 16th Street, NW.  The initial session will be conducted by a volunteer guide who explains the features of the Work Search system.

What are the services?
Work Search provides job seekers with access to information about the Washington, D.C. area job market, local job and training opportunities as well as skills assessments and interest and abilities inventories. After the initial consultation, workers will be able to access the system from any computer, as often as they want with no time limit and no cost to the job seeker.

What is the process?
• Job seeker meets with a volunteer guide who explains the Work Search system.
• After the initial session, the job seeker may access the system from any computer.
• The job seeker takes skills, interests and ability assessments that match them with opportunities listed in the local job banks.  At any point in the process, an individual can look for local job matches based on the assessments they have completed at that point.

Money Management

AARP and Family Matters are working together to provide Money Management Assistance, a program for seniors with an annual income of less than $23,475 for an individual or $33,271 for a couple.

We provide no-cost financial management assistance to District residents over the age of 65.  This program is designed to assist older Americans who want to live independently but require assistance with financial matters such as managing monthly expenses, Medicare and Social Security benefits.  The program also provides instruction on financial issues such as budgeting, debt and financial planning.

There are two components to the Money Management Program.  The Bill Payer Service offers assistance to those seniors who can manage their own finances with outside support.  The Representative Payer Service is designed for people who are not able to manage their own finances.

Bill Payer Service
Volunteers are trained to assist seniors with limited incomes who are able to manage their finances but need assistance with the paperwork.  The bill payer will help with checkbook balancing and bill paying for individuals who need help organizing their finances.  The bill payer will perform services such as helping the client manage income and expenses, write checks for the client to sign, assist the client with financial paperwork and assist with Medicare prescription drug benefits.

Representative Payer Service
Representative Payee services are available to people with limited incomes who are not able to manage his or her finances independently.  The representative payer maintains control of all benefits such as Social Security and Medicare, signs checks, spends money to meet the client’s needs and obtains Medicare drug coverage benefits.

Ms. Senior DC

The Ms. Senior District of Columbia Pageant is an annual event sponsored by the Family Matters of Greater Washington, D.C. Cameo Club, and the D.C. Office on Aging. The pageant honors women 60 years of age or older who have reached “the age of elegance” and exemplify dignity, wisdom, and grace. We believe that our seniors are an undeniable resource to our community. This pageant allows older woman to display their strength, knowledge, and beauty through song, dance, poetry, and fashion.

Ms. Senior D.C. defies myths about aging. She will have a positive outlook on life and be an active, vital part of her community. Ms. Senior District of Columbia inspires others with her mental and physical enthusiasm and will be a confident poised and talented individual who reflects the inner beauty and elegant style of the District’s senior woman.

The citywide pageant is held in the spring of each year. It is open to all women in the District of Columbia 60 years of age or older. Ms. Senior District of Columbia is selected from the pageant judges and can be nominated by a group, organization or by self-nomination. For more information about competing for the Ms. Senior D.C. title, please contact RSVP, 202-289-1510.
